Clinical overview

The BJ1104 Cranial Drill is a precision-engineered powered instrument designed specifically for cranial surgery applications. Its intelligent auto-stop mechanism activates upon breakthrough of the inner cortical table, significantly reducing the risk of inadvertent dural or brain tissue injury during craniotomy procedures. The ergonomic handpiece design minimizes surgeon fatigue during extended procedures while maintaining optimal control and tactile feedback.

Built around an imported motor platform, the system delivers consistent torque output (3.3 Nm) with exceptionally low acoustic signature (≤40 dB), creating a quieter operating environment. The entire handpiece assembly is fully autoclavable at 135°C, supporting stringent infection control protocols without compromising instrument longevity. Powered by environmentally responsible nickel-metal hydride battery technology, the system provides reliable cordless operation with rapid recharge capability.

Key features & surgeon benefits

Safety

Intelligent Auto-Stop Protection

  • Automatic cessation upon cranial breakthrough prevents dural penetration
  • Reduces risk of iatrogenic brain tissue damage during craniotomy
  • Provides tactile and mechanical feedback for enhanced surgical control
  • Supports safer execution of burr hole and craniotomy procedures
Workflow

Ergonomic Design & Performance

  • Balanced handpiece geometry reduces surgeon fatigue during extended cases
  • Variable speed control (0–1000 rpm) adapts to different bone densities
  • Exceptionally quiet operation (≤40 dB) improves OR environment
  • Cordless battery design eliminates cable management challenges
Sterilisation

Full Autoclave Capability

  • Complete handpiece sterilisation at 135°C (improved models to 155°C)
  • Eliminates reliance on chemical sterilants or gas sterilisation
  • Supports rapid instrument turnover between cases
  • High-pressure steam sterilisation (1.6 MPa) ensures comprehensive pathogen elimination
Reliability

Important usage & maintenance notes

Sterilisation Protocol

  • Sterilise handpiece at ≤135°C (improved models ≤155°C); exceeding temperature limits will damage motor components
  • Battery must be removed prior to sterilisation — battery is NOT autoclavable
  • Ensure battery compartment is completely dry after sterilisation before battery reinsertion
  • Use aseptic battery transfer ring for sterile battery installation in surgical field

Battery Management

  • Remove battery from handpiece immediately after surgery to prevent parasitic discharge
  • Failure to remove battery will significantly reduce battery service life
  • Recharge battery fully between cases for optimal performance
  • Battery warranty: 3 months under normal usage conditions

Drill Bit Care

  • Clean cranial bur immediately post-procedure using high-pressure irrigation to prevent blood coagulation
  • Thoroughly dry drill bit after cleaning to prevent corrosion
  • Cranial bur blades are manufactured from flexible medical stainless steel to prevent fracture
  • Recommended: single-use per surgery to maintain optimal cutting performance and safety

Operational Guidelines

  • Standard bone drill configuration accommodates drill bits ≤6 mm diameter
  • Acetabular reaming configuration: high torque, approximately 300 rpm
  • Cannulated drill configuration: for use with intramedullary nails or K-wires, approximately 600 rpm
  • Auto-stop mechanism activates upon inner table breakthrough — do not override safety feature
